Voice of the Waterfall

My composition for solo piano, Voice of the Waterfall, was inspired by the natural beauty of Moss Glen Falls in Stowe, Vermont, a very special place for me, and one that I have tried to visit often. If you are ever in northern Vermont, make sure to visit. It is spectacular in every season and has inspired me for many years. Thank you for watching the video, and make sure to get your free download of the song.

The photography and video are from my most recent trip to the falls this past August. My friend, artist Steven Mairella, contributed three wonderful paintings created especially for this video. My daughter Olivia contributed some video as well, and literally got her feet wet in the process! My two dogs, who have loved visiting the falls over the years since they were puppies, also make a cameo appearance.

Please take a moment to look at Steven’s paintings below and read about each one in his own words.  You can find out more about him at http://stevemartworks.com/. Hit the play button to listen to

"Voice of the Waterfall -- Mark's Waterfall #2"

 Acrylic on Canvas 18" x 24".

There is something beautiful and deeply spiritual to me about the sights and sounds of water, especially flowing water.  This is the first painting that I created for the video Voice of the Waterfall inspired by Mark’s solo piano composition of the same name from his beautiful CD, “When The 4 Winds Blow”.

The waterfall depicted in this painting is Moss Glen Falls in Stowe, Vermont.  As a result of listening to Mark’s music, viewing the videos and photos he created and provided, and painting this canvas, I feel as if there is a “connection”

between me and these falls.

"Voice of the Waterfall #2 -- The Way In"

Acrylic on Canvas, 12” x 16”.

This is my second painting inspired by “Voice of the Waterfall”.

This painting depicts an iconic walkway that leads through the forest to Moss Glen Falls in Stowe, Vermont.   The title has spiritual as well as literal meaning.

Voice of the Waterfall #3 Falling Upward_small.jpg

"Voice of the Waterfall #3 -- Falling Upward"

Acrylic on Canvas, 16” x 20”

This is my third painting inspired by Voice of the Waterfall. Mark sent me videos and photos that I used as my starting points and points of reference for this painting, which depicts a scene at the bottom of Moss Glen Falls.

I was struck by the symbolism of the cairns pointing upwards from that low point. The phrase “Falling Upward” as used in the name of the piece is an homage to the book of the same name by Fr. Richard Rohr of the Center for Action and Contemplation (“CAC”) in Albuquerque, NM.
